Solomons in limbo

South African youth international Dean Solomons has been without a club since July 1st, 2020 after Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam decided against exercising their option of extending the 21 year old’s contract.

The Cape Town born defender moved to Ajax Amsterdam in 2017 on a three year deal with an option for a further year. The club decided not to extend his contract after the young defender failed to break into the first team in the three seasons with the club.

Solomons made a total of 34 appearances, 1850 minutes in total across all youth competitions at Ajax Amsterdam, including 14 matches for Jorg Ajax that competes in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie – the second division of Dutch football.

The player was recently linked to German Bundesliga 2 outfit St Pauli and Swiss side Grasshopper but no concrete offers have come forward. As a free agent Solomons is able to join any club as he is under no transfer window deadline.

Failure in development?

Questions as to why Dean Solomons, a promising prospect could not break into the Amsterdam first team. Was it a lack of opportunity or is the development of our players not of a high international standard? Is Dean Solomons failure to make the grade in the Netherlands a reflection on our (South Africa) development system?

Coincidently this comes at a time when Ajax Amsterdam severed ties after a 21 year partnership was former Ajax Cape Town now Cape Town Spurs. Ajax Amsterdam no longer saw Cape Town as a viable place to recruit young players capable of handling European football.

Ajax Amsterdam
Statement on the Ajax Amsterdam website on 28 September 2020

“After the strategic reorientation, which was reported in February 2020 during the presentation of the half-year figures, Ajax concluded that the ambitions and results in Amsterdam are in too great a contrast to the development of the football market in South Africa,”

“Ajax has expressed the ambition to join the European top in a structural manner and in recent years, not enough talent has been produced in the South African market of the level that Ajax strives for. Moreover, Ajax sees insufficient potential for the future here. The club has shifted its focus to other markets. Ajax Amsterdam had owned the 51% shares in Ajax Cape Town since 1999.”
